Coachella Valley Fund Awards Scholarship to Local Student

On May 15th, the 8th Annual Coachella Valley Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The event seeks to bring together all who support equality and justice, and celebrates the memory of Harvey Milk, an influential civil rights activist.

For the second year in a row, The Community Foundation (TCF) was proud to sponsor the event. TCF staff Paula Kennedy, Jose Marquez, and Denisha Shackelford, as well as Coachella Valley Fund President, Robert Smith, were happy to attend.

The scholarship recipient is Cole Brett-Burks, a graduating senior from Palm Springs High School. He intends to pursue a degree in Music Education at California State University, Long Beach.

“I am pursuing a career in music education because I have a passion to teach, motivate, and inspire. Even if I only inspire one or two students, that’s all that matters,” said Cole. “I would like to be a positive LGBT figure for students.”

The scholarship was made possible by The Coachella Valley Fund at The Community Foundation. The Fund was established in 2005 to enhance the quality of life in the Desert with the funds used exclusively to benefit causes in the Coachella Valley. The Fund has sub-funds that benefit persons diagnosed with HIV, arts education, literacy projects, the Coachella Valley Youth Grantmakers, and general charitable purposes.
