Dave and Mary Hjorth Made Decades of Impact on Education

Dave and Mary Hjorth With guidance from their parents, the Hjorths have always wanted to leave the world a little better than they found it by helping others.

One of their first endeavors was providing college scholarships at Upland High School. The scholarship awards were made possible thanks to the couple’s two funds established at The Community Foundation: the Dave and Mary Hjorth Family Donor Advised Endowment Fund, and the Dave and Mary Hjorth Family Donor Advised Granting Fund.

2019 will be a milestone for the Hjorths. It will be the 20th consecutive year they have provided scholarships through their two funds!

In addition to the scholarships, the Hjorths have been involved in the local community in various ways. Mary belonged to numerous boards including PTA, sports, and music in the schools in Upland. She also participated in the local Foothill Chapter of National Charity League with her daughter, Joanna, for six years. She now serves as a Board Member on the Chaffey College Trust.

Dave served for over 30 years on various national and international organizations in the financial services field. Locally, his involvement revolved around Kiwanis and working with San Antonio Regional Hospital (SARH) for 15 years, culminating with nine years on the Foundation Board of Directors.

“I brought many of my parents’ admirable values with me to my family and community,” Mary remarked. The Hjorths’ giving has been instilled in the second generation, as their children, Nick and Joanna, are now also very involved with scholarships.

“Our passion continues to be to give back,” said Dave. “As Winston Churchill once said, ‘You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.’”
