Dr. Loren Sanchez: Giving Back; A Family Value

Grateful for the long, successful career that he’s had, Dr. Loren E. Sanchez felt very strongly about giving back to the community that had given him so much.

Giving back to community has always been a part of Dr. Sanchez’s life. “My mom was the president of my school’s PTA, and my dad was involved with a service club in Cucamonga,” said Dr. Sanchez. “They were good examples of what it means to give back.”

Dr. Loren SanchezIn 2017, Dr. Sanchez became a scholarship fund holder at The Community Foundation. He established the Dr. Loren E. Sanchez AVID Scholarship Fund. The fund provides an annual scholarship to a graduating senior from Upland High School who is currently enrolled in the AVID program.

In 2018, Dr. Sanchez made an IRA Charitable Rollover contribution to his fund to provide additional support for aspiring students. He was able to make his gift through his IRA because the federal government permits you to. If you are 70 ½ or older, you can rollover up to $100,000 from your IRA to a qualified charity such as The Community Foundation without increasing your taxable income or paying additional taxes. Your gift will also satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

Before his career took off, Dr. Sanchez was like most students who struggled to find their career path. Born and raised in Upland, he attended Chaffey College and then University of Redlands, where he got a B.A. in Business Administration. He got a job in Ontario where he was sitting behind a desk all day and thought to himself, “I’m not going to do this for the rest of my life.”

Dr. Loren SanchezHe then decided to go to California State University, Los Angeles to get a teaching degree. After acquiring his degree, Dr. Sanchez got a job teaching elementary school in Upland for 7 years. He slowly advanced, becoming the principal for 7 years, Assistant Superintendent of Upland Unified and finally, Superintendent of Upland Unified in 1988. He remained the Superintendent for 11 years and then retired in 1999.

Today, Dr. Sanchez is an active community member. He serves as the current Board Chair of the Price Foundation, Board member of the Scheu Family YMCA Board member of the Upland Public Library Foundation and Immediate Past President of the Chaffey College Foundation Board. “I believe that it takes a lot of people to make a community a strong one. I want to share what talents I have for the benefit of the community,” said Dr. Sanchez.

Now in his 80’s, it looks like there’s no slowing down. “It’s been a great run. I look forward to continue supporting projects that are important to me and the community.”
