Youth Grantmakers Learning to Make Money Moves

Youth Grantmakers Learning to Make Money MovesThrough a grant provided by Citizen’s Business Bank, all four Youth Grantmakers Programs (Coachella Valley, Native Youth, Riverside, San Bernardino) participated in an hour-long session on financial literacy in May.

“What better way to close out the last meetings of the programs than learning how to budget?” our Youth Grantmakers Advisor, Denisha Shackelford, stated. “With a majority of the graduating seniors from our programs going off to college, we thought it would be beneficial for them to conclude the program with this session.”

Youth Grantmakers Learning to Make Money MovesThe purpose of the session was to provide students with information on how to manage their personal finances. Students were asked such questions as: What is a checking account? What is the purpose for having a checking account? What is the purpose of a savings account? What’s the difference between a credit card and a debit card? How do you properly write out a check? And most importantly, why do we need to budget?

At the end of the session the students played a “Budget Game,” further improving their financial literacy as they prepare for adult life.
