ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS

The founder of The Community Foundation, Charles E. Brouse, felt that the best way to give back to Riverside and the surrounding area was to fund, in perpetuity, scholarships for deserving students who otherwise would not be able to attend college.

Today, many years later, scholarships remain a large focus of our grants even as we have grown in geographic size and scope of giving. We average $1 million a year in scholarships to every public two- and four-year college and university in the two-county region, as well as to colleges and universities in other parts of the nation. The awards not only recognize these students' achievements, but also, more significantly, provide hope for those seeking to better themselves through education.

Because each donor has a different vision for the scholarships they wish to fund, there are a wide variety of scholarships awarded by The Community Foundation. Some examples are:
  • Providing a private school education for the K-12 years for students who otherwise could not afford such an education.
  • Generous scholarships through Riverside Construction, which focuses on Civil Engineering in the region.
  • General scholarships through Altura Credit Union to graduating high school students in the Riverside County.
  • Generous scholarships to students in studying specific fields, e.g. special education, nursing, veterinary sciences, etc.
Most of our scholarships are awarded through the colleges and universities. Students who are interested in applying for a scholarship should check with their school counselor or financial aid office for information and applications.

A few exceptions to this rule exist. Students can apply directly to The Community Foundation for these scholarships. Check the Scholarship Schedule for more details.
