The Community Foundation Serving Riverside and San Bernardino Counties
Environmental Initiative Listening Session Findings
Executive Summary

September 16, 2009

Quality of Life –
The Community Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in the communities it serves. The Environment was identified as a critical area where TCF could provide leadership and generate resources. Quality of life is not just clean water and clean air, but good jobs in a thriving economy. Education was identified early as the overarching theme but with attention to resource conservation, responsible alternative energy development and land use policy development as key issues and areas of focus. Identifying opportunities that supported and complimented TCF’s core mission and purpose were also considered in the framework of the Environmental Initiative.

Planning Grant –
TCF received a planning grant to hire an Environmental Consultant and expand the concept of an Environmental Initiative. The grant was also provided to conduct a series of Listening Sessions and hire a Facilitator to conduct them. Bank of America provided funding as well to support the costs of the meetings. Eight Sessions were conducted in diverse settings throughout Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The purpose of the sessions was to hear about the greatest needs in the region and identify some of the best funding opportunities and programs. Over 150 regional and environmental/conservation leaders attended these meetings and provided excellent feedback and information to TCF.

Findings-
There is an extensive list of needs and opportunities for the region to support environmental programs. Some of the most pressing include:

  • Education – transportation funding for K-12 field experiences, comprehensive programs for regional leaders and policy makers with regards to planning/land use
  • Supporting Conservation – acquisition funding, bridge loans, maintenance funds/endowments
  • Capacity Building for Non-Profits – provide resources such as inventories and clearing house for regional information, board development, fundraising and planned giving
  • Promotion and Recognition of Green Technologies – recognize and reward best practices, help lead the branding of the region, promote economic sustainability

Next Steps-
Comprehensive Campaign Plan/Capacity Building- The Community Foundation wants to take the lead in raising significant resources for the region to support the programs that are listed above and those that may emerge. TCF will recruit and convene an Advisory Committee that will help finalize a campaign plan and identify funding opportunities and resources. Capacity grants will be the initial focus to get the work done with endowments becoming a major portion of the end product – to support environmental programs in the region, “for good, for ever”. The intent is to raise $10-20 million dollars, much in perpetuity.

TCF will also help play the role of a neutral convener and collaborator that will promote a balanced approach to the future of the region.
